Stress can be absolutely devastating to your health. In this day and age there are more people developing serious cases of stress than ever before.  We usually put this on ourselves. If you don’t want to get in a bad way there are things you can do to maintain a healthy mental state. After all, stress can lead to some serious conditions and eventual death. Is that what you want? Have a look at these great ways to keep stress under control and take charge of your mind.

Turn off the TV and put down the newspaper

There are bad things happening all over the world, every single day. You know that, but why put yourself through it? Every time you turn on the TV or open the newspaper you will be faced with another heartbreaking story. You don’t need to read that. It just puts a downer on your day. If you keep listening to all the terrible things happening in the world it’s going to start affecting you subconsciously. Don’t throw that kind of stuff into your life. You probably have enough things to deal with.

Look at old photographs

I’m sure everyone has some special photographs lying around somewhere that always remain in the box. Or if you’re from the younger generation they are probably stored somewhere on a computer. Looking at old photos every now and again will always make you feel happy and relaxed. It’s like going back in time to all the best events of your life. You can even do this with music. I’m sure there must be a song or two that automatically lifts you up whenever you hear it.

Learn to meditate

Too many people misunderstand meditation. For some they think it’s enough to sit quietly and think. Meditation isn’t about thinking; it’s the absence of thought. If you meditate everyday it can have an enormous benefit on your health. It will keep your mind completely fresh. Whenever you get into a meditative trance it will relax you like never before and cancel out any stressful feelings. It’s even better if you do it every morning and before you go to sleep at night.

Use supplements

Including supplements in your diet is a great way to reduce stress. Unless you have a perfect diet, which not many people have, then you’re always going to be missing out on some important vitamins and minerals. Buy a multi-vitamin pack and make sure you take one every morning. Another great supplement for reducing stress is Omega-3 oils. This is usually added to our diet through things like oily fish, but not many people eat enough of it to truly gain the benefits.

Start to exercise

Exercise doesn’t just give you a great-looking healthy body, it also helps improve your mental health. Have you ever heard about the runners high? It’s when you push your limits during exercise and your body releases chemicals which make you feel great. Once you start exercising you will know what it feels like after a session. There’s not much that compares. And don’t worry about having to take it easy in the beginning. The only thing that matters is getting up from your seat and actually doing something. Anything.

Go on holiday

We don’t get many holidays from work. Once a year it’s great to break free from everything and have a nice relaxing holiday. If you don’t have much money, don’t worry. It doesn’t need to be out the country for you to get the relaxation you need. If it’s nice you could just as easily set up a chair in the garden and relax as you listen to music. Just turn the phone off and let yourself get away from it all. If you manage to do this for one week per year it’s enough to give your mind a sufficient break.
