Ashwagandha is the Sanskrit name of Withania somnifera, also sometimes referred to as Indian Ginseng. If you’re familiar with ginseng, you’ll know that the ginseng is thought of as the youthful or longevity herb and is also used to strengthen Qi, thereby improving energy levels and removing weakness. Again, as with ginseng, ashwagandha is an adaptogen, meaning it adapts well to stress and transfers that property when consumed. Ashwagandha also contains 3 naturally occurring antioxidants.
Besides being a natural Qi booster, strengthening and rejuvenating the body, enhancing youthfulness and longevity, and encouraging balance, ashwagandha is used in Ayurveda for cases of depression and insomnia.
- In Ayurveda, Withania somnifera supports a positive mood and is used in the treatment of depression. Dosage depends on the condition and severity.
- For the relief of insomnia, mix 3g ashwagandha with ghee and sugar, swallow as if a pill before bedtime.
For simple relaxation and calming after a stressful day, ashwagandha powder can be mixed into water and drunk as tea.
Note: Not advised for pregnant women.
